Reese is a Graduate Student at the University of Sussex.
Reese describes himself as ‘a computer monkey who works on making programmes to do my work for me!’
Within DES he works on a few things, such as with Mike Jarvis and Piff ,(Point spread function), helping Spencer Everett with the Balrog galaxy insertions and mainly with XCS – X-ray Cluster survey. He is specifically interested in how machine learning and other data techniques can be applied to Astronomy.
We asked Reese a few questions, here’s what he had to say…
What is your favorite part about being a scientist?
Getting to work with students who are aspiring to become scientists. Hopefully something I do will encourage some of them to become a scientist too!
What is your favorite space-related image, and why?
(See right) Because it was the first time I have seen the milky way!
What is your favorite book, movie, and/or TV show?
How to train your Dragon, because not only is it a great film but the first movie my Fiancee and I watched together!
If you weren’t a scientist, what would your dream job be?
Fire engine. I know its probably not even possible but that’s what 4 year old me wanted to be, and I have to respect that choice!
Any advice for aspiring scientists?
It’s okay to be wrong, the more you’re wrong now, the quicker you’ll learn!
