J. Allyn Smith is a Professor at Austin Peay State University. He joined the faculty in 2006 with a B.S. in General and Molecular Biology, an M.S. in Space Sciences (Atmospheric Physics), an M.S.
in Space Technology (Space Systems Operations), and a Ph.D. in Space Sciences (Astrophysics), all from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL. His background is in observational astrophysics with primary research interests in survey calibration, white dwarf science, star clusters and variable stars.
We asked Allyn a few more questions — here’s what he had to say:
What do you think has been the most exciting advance in science / technology in the last 10 years?
The most exciting advance in the last ten years … wow, there have been so many. In astronomy this would probably have to be the new detectors and rafts of imaging systems. But, high on the list are all the medical advances, especially the stem cell research. Hopefully, in another 10 years, knee and hip replacement surgeries will be a thing of the past with the capability to regrow cartilage in place becoming an everyday practice.
Any advice for aspiring scientists?
Never give up and don’t take “no” for an answer.
